The Kansas City Royals placed first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino on the 10-day injured list with a right hamate fracture.
On Saturday, he suffered the injury in the fifth inning against the Houston Astros. After a swing, Pasquantino appeared to be in pain and would pop out to third baseman Isaac Paredes.
As he ran to first base, he grimaced in pain. Right after that, he went into the clubhouse and didn’t return to the game. Pasquantino is batting .224 with 6 home runs and 32 RBIs this season.
“He had surgery this morning to remove the broken hamate,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “Everything went as they would have thought in that. So timeline is somewhere as 4-6 weeks, probably. We will know a lot more as he starts the rehab process.”
Quatraro also shared insights into his conversation with Pasquantino about the injury.
“I just told him I was frustrated for him,” Quatraro said. “Especially as he’s got himself going, you never want to lose any of the guys to injury. For him, it stinks because I know how hard he’s worked to get back and be productive. He’s gone through injuries before, it can be a real grind.
As for who will replace him at first base? At least for Sunday’s game against the Astros, it will be Jac Caglianone.
“Cags will be over there the majority of the time,” Quatraro said. “We have (Nick) Loftin, we have Salvy (Perez), just depending on the matchup and how many games in a row and those kinds of things. We have to be mindful of all the workloads and all those things for all the guys.”
