The Houston Astros (33–39) and the Kansas City Royals (28–43) wrap up their three-game series today at Kauffman Stadium.
The Astros look to complete the series sweep after following Friday’s 10–8 win with an 8–7 victory in another high-scoring game on Saturday.
Kansas City got out to an early 3–0 lead on RBI singles by Michael Massey and Vinnie Pasquantino, and a passed ball by Astros catcher Christian Vazquez.
Houston then cut the deficit on Christian Walker’s 18th homer of the season in the fourth. The Royals responded with a solo shot by Lane Thomas, and then the Astros pounded two homers — one by Brice Matthews in the fifth and another by Jake Meyers in the sixth.
The Royals regained the lead on a bases-clearing double by Carter Jensen. Jose Altuve went deep in the eighth to tie the game at 7–7, and then the Astros pulled ahead for good on a groundout by Walker.
Yordan Alvarez went 3-for-5, while Altuve was one of three Houston players who finished with two hits.
The Royals received three hits from Bobby Witt Jr., who recorded the 800th hit of his career.
This afternoon, Spencer Arrighetti (7–1, 2.21 ERA) gets the start for the Astros, while Stephen Kolek (3–1, 3.14 ERA) takes the mound for the Royals
After posting a 0.93 ERA over five starts in May, Arrighetti hasn’t been as sharp in June, with a 6.30 ERA over two starts this month.
Kolek has a 2.25 ERA over two starts in June, with a string of mainly strong outings since his season debut in early May.
Prediction
Saturday’s game showed how dangerous Houston’s lineup can be when Alvarez, Altuve, and Walker are all producing. The Royals have battled throughout the series, but Arrighetti gives the Astros a significant advantage in the finale.
