Royals get trade update on $11.1 million first baseman with .660 OPS originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Kansas City Royals are on the outside looking in at a postseason spot, and are currently 6.5 games back of the third and final Wild Card spot.

Their season needs a big turnaround for them to not make significant changes at this year’s trade deadline.

Kansas City could move one of the organization’s fan favorites, writes Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly.

“Vinnie Pasquantino‘s monster performance for the upstart Italy squad in the World Baseball Classic hasn’t translated to a career year for the affable first baseman, as he’s hitting just .223 with a .660 OPS,” Kelly wrote.

Pasquantino is currently on the injured list and will miss four to six weeks with a broken hamate bone. He is coming off the best season of his career, hitting 32 home runs while driving in 113 runs.

But would the Royals consider making this move, even without his injury and struggles?

“Would the Royals ultimately move on from the 28-year-old? We’ll see. He has two remaining arbitration years, so he’s going to get more expensive in the coming seasons,” Kelly added. “In the event they trade Pasquantino, the Royals could move Jac Caglianone back to his natural position for first base, should they choose to go that route.”

In all likelihood, the Royals will receive trade interest involving Pasquantino. But they could still have confidence in the five-year veteran to bounce back once he returns from injury or in 2027.
