Louis C.K. is set to make his return to streaming after nine years. His new special is releasing soon, and has reopened a huge debate.
C.K.’s new special, Ridiculous, is set to premiere on Netflix on June 30, 2026. For the comedian, it’ll be his first streaming special in nine years, following Louis C.K.: 2017. After that special, C.K.’s career came to a screeching halt of sorts when he was accused of sexual misconduct at the height of the #MeToo movement. C.K. acknowledged the behavior, which alleged that C.K. would expose himself to multiple women and then attempt to or did masturbate in front of them.
While C.K. has been away from the world of mainstream fame for almost a decade, his return, and his activities in the interim, show that the perceived consequences of the #MeToo movement were woefully not enough.
Louis C.K.’s return shows that sometimes, there are very few consequences
While many might see C.K.’s absence of almost 10 years from mainstream fame as a consequence, the reality is a bit bleaker. Following his exile from the world of comedy television, C.K. continued his stand-up career, for the most part. The star self-released several albums and specials throughout the years, and even took home a Grammy in 2022 for best comedy album for his special Sincerely Louis CK.
While not the first star to make a “comeback” after various allegations, C.K.’s return does show that, for the most part, the consequences many stars faced during the #MeToo movement seem to only exist at a vanity level. C.K.’s fame has taken a dip in terms of his star power when it comes to landing TV or movie roles, but his success in the world of comedy has seemingly never taken a real dive, and his fanbase remains strong to this day.
To give C.K. the benefit of the doubt, the star has talked about entering in several programs following his fall from grace. During a talk with Theo Von, C.K. opened up about entering a program for Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, as well as admitting he had been undergoing counseling and therapy to deal with what he described as behavioral and intimacy issues.
At face value, it’s a good sign. The fact that C.K. was quick to admit to his issues in 2017 and seek help shows that he at least acknowledges they were wrong from the start. However, the fact that C.K. continued his comedy career throughout all of his issues, and is now ready to re-enter the world of mainstream fame with seemingly no blowback or issues, shows that we still have a long way to go when it comes to seeing actual accountability for some of these acts.
