SHEBOYGAN – Kohler-Andrae State Park is offering a variety of nature programs in the week ahead, including invasive species removal, bird walks, wildflower exploration, dragonfly observation and live music, according to a community announcement.

The programs are designed for different age groups and interests, providing opportunities for education and community engagement.

Volunteer to remove invasive species

The week kicks off with a volunteer event to remove invasive plant species from 1-4 p.m. June 21.

Participants are encouraged to bring work gloves and help park naturalist Phyllis McKenzie remove shrubs such as buckthorn, honeysuckle, Japanese barberry and multiflora rose.

The event is open to individuals ages 16 and older, and attendees are advised to wear long pants, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes. Volunteers will meet at the Black River Trails parking lot, P1.

Bird walk set for June 23

A discovery bird walk is scheduled for 8-10 a.m. June 23, led by master naturalists Janet and Andy Raddatz.

The walk will take place along Old Park Road and the Ancient Shores Trail, with the route lasting about two to three hours.

Participants who are 12 and older are welcome to join and can leave at any time. Some binoculars will be available. The walk will start at the Friends Pond parking lot at 2020 Old Park Road.

Explore wildflowers with a master naturalist

On June 24, master naturalist Karen Merlau will lead a wildflower walk from 1:30-2:30 p.m. along the Black River Trail.

Participants will have the chance to discover a variety of wildflowers as the seasons change. Attendees are advised to bring water, sunscreen and bug spray, and to wear appropriate clothing for walking.

Learn about dragonflies

A dragonfly exploration event is set for 9-10:30 a.m. June 27, led by naturalist Phyllis McKenzie.

Attendees will learn about the more than 160 species of dragonflies and damselflies in Wisconsin and observe how they survive both above and below water.

The event will include activities such as scooping aquatic nymphs and catching adult dragonflies with nets. Participants will meet at the closed gate near the entry to the campground, near parking lot P4. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Live music in the park

The week concludes with a music event featuring the Brew Brothers and Sister Band from 7 to 8 p.m. June 27 at the amphitheater near the campground. The band will perform pop rock, new country and classic rock hits.

In case of inclement weather, the program will move to the Sanderling Nature Center.
