Sixpence None the Richer bassist Justin Cary has sadly died aged just 50, following complications from a stroke. His wife Linda said he “passed peacefully” on Thursday (June 18). He had suffered a “serious stroke” last week and underwent two surgeries at New York’s Albany Med hospital, but sadly died from complications. He was in the intensive care unit when he died.
Linda said on a GoFundMe set up to support the couple’s medical bills: “Please continue to pray and give strength during this very difficult time. The road ahead is uncertain and scary so if you are so inclined to pray, send good vibes and healing energy it would be truly appreciated.”
An update on the page earlier this week read: “Justin is in the ICU and on a respirator. He is receiving amazing care! Linda is right next to his bed reading to him and hopeful he hears her. She is also telling him how much he is loved.”
The fundraiser has so far raised $38,365 of a $40,000 goal.
Justin’s bandmate Leigh Nash paid tribute to him on her social media, writing: “‘We sure had a great time’ is an understatement. Thank you, Justin. We love you forever. Please keep his dear Linda close to your hearts. She is our family. There’s never been anybody like Justin.”
His long-time friend and collaborator Philip Madeira also paid tribute, writing: “A world class musician, to be sure, but more so a great human being. I was lucky enough to join his band Sixpence None The Richer for some shows in recent months.
“He was the musical director, and I needed his kindness during rehearsals where I certainly felt like I was drowning. His encouragement buoyed me, and thankfully I rose to the occasions… Be good to each other; you might be the buoy for someone who’s in over their head.”
