Clive Davis, the towering industry figure who masterminded the ascent of several legendary record labels, died at his Manhattan residence on Monday. The 94-year-old music mogul had recently received hospital treatment for respiratory complications, though a specific cause of death remains unconfirmed.
Born in Brooklyn in 1932, the Harvard-educated lawyer initially entered the business through the legal department of CBS. He quickly ascended the corporate ladder to lead Columbia Records by the late 1960s. Possessing an extraordinary ear for talent, he completely transformed the conservative pop imprint by embracing the burgeoning rock movement.
After experiencing the Monterey Pop Festival, he famously secured contracts for iconic artists including Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen and Carlos Santana. His tenure ended in controversy in 1973 when he was dismissed over alleged financial misconduct and subsequently pleaded guilty to a tax evasion charge.
Building Arista and J Records
Undeterred by the scandal, the executive launched Arista Records the following year. This second chapter proved extraordinarily fruitful as he nurtured a diverse roster ranging from Barry Manilow to Patti Smith. His most significant achievement during this period was discovering a teenage Whitney Houston and guiding her to unprecedented global superstardom.
When internal politics forced his exit from Arista at the turn of the millennium, he established J Records with financial backing from BMG. There he repeated his star-making formula by transforming newcomer Alicia Keys into an international sensation before ultimately serving as chief creative officer for Sony Music Entertainment.
Beyond his formidable corporate achievements, the visionary was famous for hosting the industry’s most exclusive annual pre-Grammy gala which regularly attracted the biggest names in entertainment and politics.
He also left an enduring educational legacy by establishing an institute of recorded music at New York University in 2003. Survived by his four children, the twice-divorced impresario will be remembered as a true pioneer who fundamentally reshaped the modern pop landscape.
