The Kansas City Royals are expected to be a seller ahead of the upcoming MLB trade deadline. Kansas City entered the season with lofty expectations, but the team has failed to play up to their potential. Could the Royals potentially bounce back? It is possible, but it seems as if the ball club will sell at the deadline.
With that being said, they are probably not going to enter a complete rebuild. They still have core players such as Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia under contract for years to come.

The Royals will likely end up making veterans who are going to enter free agency fairly soon available for trades. Thomas Harrigan of MLB.com recently mentioned Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo as potential trade candidates.
Lugo and Wacha both have club options for the 2028 campaign. They are under contract through the 2027 campaign.
Lugo, 36, and Wacha, 34, have had similar 2026 seasons. Lugo has pitched to a 3.69 ERA across 15 starts. Meanwhile, Wacha has turned in a 3.64 ERA.
There are plenty of teams around the MLB world that would love to have veteran pitchers with ERAs in the mid-3’s. While Wacha and Lugo may not make or break a team’s season, they could certainly provide a crucial impact.

It will be interesting to see if they are made available. Barring unforeseen circumstances, both pitchers will likely be available for trades. Most contenders will surely inquire about the veteran hurlers.
The Royals hold a 32-45 record at the moment. Kansas City is in last place in the American League Central standings. The ball club is nine games behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the division.
Kansas City is in an interesting spot. In all reality, the team features a talented roster. Sure, it has not played up to expectations. The future remains bright, though. Trading pitchers such as Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo could help the Royals quickly add talent while not completely rebuilding.

For now, the team’s focus is on its current series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kansas City won the first two games of the series on Thursday and Friday. Saturday was an off day for the ball clubs. The next game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. First pitch for the ball game is scheduled for 2:10 PM EST as the Royals look to clinch a series sweep.
