Sophie Calle The Chromatic Diet (1998)
Long before TikTok trends encouraged people to eat by colors, Sophie Calle transformed the idea into conceptual art.
In The Chromatic Diet, the French artist restricted herself to foods of a single color each day, turning nourishment into a reflection on control, routine, perception, and identity. What fascinates me is how a conceptual gesture from 1998 feels strangely familiar today.
We live in a moment where food has become part of a visual language. Not hunger itself, but the privilege of choosing how to perform it. Diets, restrictions, aesthetics, wellness culture, and even trends built around scarcity often circulate as symbols of status rather than necessity.
No criticism is intended toward the public figures shown in this reel. The initial reference was the “rainbow diet” trend and the contemporary obsession with eating by colors. Still, I cannot help but reflect on a world where many struggle to access basic nutrition while others turn restriction into aspiration.
What goes around comes around. We are simple, and at the same time, incredibly complex.
