Althorp House – the Spencer family estate where Diana spent much of her childhood and where the former Princess of Wales is buried – is reportedly scheduled to be closed to visitors for two days while the Sussex family is expected to be in the UK, fuelling rumours that the family could be visiting the home during their trip.
Now, a passage from the Duke of Sussex’s 2023 memoir has resurfaced, detailing the first time Meghan Markle, 44, visited Princess Diana’s grave with her now-husband in 2022.
Reflecting on the moment, Harry penned: “No visit to this place was ever easy, but this one… twenty-fifth anniversary. And Meg’s first time. At long last, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet mum.”
“We hesitated, hugging, and then I went first. I placed flowers on the grave. Meg gave me a moment, and I spoke to my mother in my head, told her I missed her, asked her for guidance and clarity.”
He went on: “Feeling that Meg might also want a moment, I went around the hedge, scanned the pond. When I came back, Meg was kneeling, eyes shut, palms against the stone.”
Harry then revealed the two things that the Suits actress had prayed for while sitting at the grave, writing: “I asked, as we walked back to the boat, what she’d prayed for. Clarity, she said. And guidance.”
The resurfaced excerpt prompted a major online reaction from royal fans, with many accusing the couple of using what should have been a personal moment for publicity.
“Oh please this is becoming sick. How tasteless can Harry and Meghan get? Can you imagine Prince and Princess of Wales turning such a visit into a publicity stunt and making it public?” one person wrote.
Another similarly added: “Meghan didn’t even know Diana what right has she to think that she can use Diana’s memory for her PR and merching?”
The passage also saw fans voice their concern about the couple potentially visiting Diana’s grave during their July trip.
“And she needs to go there again because? The simple answer is a photo opportunity, more publicity and to make more money,” one person shared.
Last week, it was confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would be visiting the UK with their children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, between July 6 and July 10 after living in the United States for four years.
The family, who will be embarking on the transatlantic trip to attend the One Year To Go Invictus events in Birmingham, have also been invited to stay at Buckingham Palace by Harry’s father King Charles, Daily Mirror reports.
