Luis de la Rosa, an animator whose credits include Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and My Little Pony: The Movie, died on Wednesday after being struck by a train in France, where he was attending a film festival. He was 34.
According to local newspaper Le Dauphine Libéré, a man in his 30s had been walking along the railway tracks, in an area closed to the public, when he strayed too close and was struck by a Leman Express locomotive around 8 p.m. local time.
The conductor, who had spotted de la Rosa ahead and sounded a warning horn to no avail, called for emergency services, but the illustrator was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police investigation has been launched to determine a cause of death.
De La Rosa, who was born in Mexico and based in Vancouver, was in town to attend the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and reportedly wearing his credentials when he was killed.
The illustrator had been at the event on behalf of his indie animation project, Ash Raider World, which he documented on social media and described as “fueled by sound driven by freedom.”
On YouTube, he posted a 19-second clip with the description: “In a world where music activates a mysterious fuel called Melodium, a young skater on the run from the authorities joins a gang of criminals to buy a new identity and find true freedom.”
