PORTLAND (WGME) — Online gambling in Maine could be taking a step beyond sports betting.

Friday, a casino group discussed a partnership with three Wabanaki nations, which will bring online casino gaming to Maine.

Caesars Entertainment says the partnership will help grow online gambling in Maine while investing in the state.

Mainers can already sports bet on their phones or in person at casinos or places like Oddfellahs in Portland, but this partnership goes beyond that.

That’s because Caesars Entertainment is looking to start an online casino that can be accessed right from your phone in Maine.

The group says it will invest in the local workforce by training members of each Wabanaki nation and provide financial support to help fund tribal community programs.

The platform is set to be launched in Maine by next year, and it would include table games like blackjack, poker and craps.

It became legal in Maine this year, but the state is currently in the rulemaking process for how it will work.

Oxford Casino and Sportsbook has challenged the law in court, which only allows the tribes to offer online betting.

They argue this law gives the tribes an unfair monopoly.

Online sports betting has been legal in Maine since 2023 and creates millions of dollars in tax revenue.

A senior VP for Caesars says this is the next step for people who want to play responsibly.

“It’s a great time. People want to do this activity on their phones, and we are going to provide a safe, convenient and responsible way to do that,” Caesars Digital Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer Dan Shapiro said.

CBS13 reached out to Oxford Casino, but they were unable to comment at this time.

Officials will discuss the rulemaking process and establish how online gambling will work next month.
