The Gist
Kate Middleton and her son Prince George made a rare appearance on June 27 at a Royal Air Force base.

The appearance comes as George begins to take on a more active role as a royal.
Kate Middleton made an unexpected royal appearance this weekend. Joined by her eldest son, Prince George, the princess made a surprise trip to the Royal Air Force Coningsby on June 27 to mark Armed Forces Day.
In a video shared on Instagram, both mother and son suited up for the occasion in coordinated business-ready looks. Kate wore a gray blazer with a houndstooth checked print in blue and tan. It appeared to be a tailored jacket by Max Mara. She paired the blazer with a simple fitted scoop neck white top, black cigarette pants, and brown suede flats. She wore her long dark hair in soft waves and a deep side part, showing off a pair of drop pearl earrings. Meanwhile, her 12-year-old son looked more grown up than ever in a dark navy suit, pale blue shirt, and brown suede loafers.
In the video, Kate was pictured chatting to members of the RAF at the base before smiling as she sat in the cockpit of one of the jets. George, who has reportedly been taking private flying lessons, also had the chance to board one of the planes.

“Honouring Service and Sacrifice,” the post was captioned.
“Marking Armed Forces Day by reflecting on time spent with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby,” it went on. “Learning about the extraordinary history of these aircraft and meeting the pilots and engineers who keep their legacy alive. A powerful reminder of the courage, skill and dedication of those who serve, past and present. Thank you to all those who have served and continue to serve.”

The checked blazer has become one of Kate’s go-to daytime looks over the years. In March, for instance, she wore a gray checked blazer while attending an event to support the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Then, in May, she wore another gray blazer, this one with white stripes, for an outing at Reggio Emilia during her trip to Italy.
George’s rare outing with his mother comes just a few days after it was revealed that the prince will follow in his father’s footsteps and attend Eton College in the fall. “Eton was a much-needed haven for William,” royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith told People. “It will give George a rigorous education that he will need for his role.”
Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary Ailsa Anderson also spoke to People about the news, sharing that “it’s been a gentle introduction to royal life, which has let Prince George build his confidence.” Now, it seems, George is beginning to slowly take on more and more royal responsibilities ahead of his time at Eton—and his latest outing with his mother is one such example.
