MIRAMICHI • Two weeks after the original date for their home opener, the Chatham Miramichi Honda Ironmen finally got to play a home game, albeit at a different local field.
The Ironmen (6-3) toppled the Fredericton Simpson Royals 6-1 in New Brunswick Senior Baseball League play on Thursday at Waldo Henderson Memorial Field in Chatham Head.
Chatham’s regular home base, Ironmen Field, has been limited to daytime games lately as work on installing new lightpoles and netting poles remains ongoing.
The Ironmen were scheduled to host the Saint John AJ’s Alpines for a doubleheader on Saturday at Ironmen Field, but the games were postponed due to a risk of thundershowers.
Thursday’s triumph moved the Ironmen into second place in the five-team senior circuit. They and the Royals (7-4) both trail the three-time defending champ Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders (10-4) by one and a half games. Meanwhile, the Alpines (3-8) are five and a half games back of first place, and the winless Moncton Dixie Lee Mets (0-7) are six and a half games behind.
