There are lots of things that can go wrong on a post-grad trip. You can lose your passport. You can miss a flight. You can book the hotel for the wrong night. But none of those things are quite as bad as what happens in The Devil’s Mouth, which hits Prime Video on July 29 and stars Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, Nico Hiraga, Gavin Casalegno, Tommi Rose, and Tayme Thapthimthong. The movie follows a group of best friends who go on a trip to Thailand before they all enter the real world, and they end up trapped in a cave system with a shark in the water. Yes, it’s as crazy as it sounds, and we have the exclusive first look.
Here’s the trailer:
Looks like my absolute worst nightmare, but I do support any film that includes the song “No Broke Boys,” which is a banger. And here are the first photos of the film—if you suffer from claustrophobia, be warned!!

Jirathit Saengavut“My character, Sara, is going through something relatable with her best friend Max played by Lana Condor,” Kathryn said. “Sara wants to carve her own path and assert independence but doesn’t want to lose her best friend in the process. That’s a tricky thing to communicate, and then you add a bull shark and your true colors come out. It was an exciting script from start to finish. I couldn’t wait to attack such a complex story heightened by the life and death stakes the shark and cave brought to what Sara was going through. It was insane!”

Jirathit Saengavut“I love ensemble casts,” Lana Condor said. “I love them. I think they’re so much fun, and I always love when everyone has very specific character dynamics. Being able to work with a group of five was such a great experience because I love team settings. I’ve also been a huge fan of Kathryn Newton for so long, and I’d always hoped we’d get the chance to work together. She’s been very supportive of me throughout my career, so I was very, very excited to finally find a project with Katherine because I think she’s incredible.”

Jirathit Saengavut“I think fear and uncontrollable circumstances really show the heart of a person, so to see my character revert back to being a scared kid is honestly more relatable—even though it’s somewhat comical—than most people think,” Gavin said. “So getting to kind of be goofy and make Nico carry me in some of it was a plus.”

Jirathit Saengavut“This movie allowed me to use my physicality to perform at a high level,” Kathryn said. I got to tell a wonderful story about two best friends, trying to survive their deep friendship and a bull shark. In the end we all became great friends. The movie brought us really close in real life too, when you see the movie you can feel it. You could say it was a splash.”

Amazon Prime“I hiked mountains to get into caves for this movie. I hung by just one wire off a cliff side for this movie! It was so cool,” Kathryn said. “We were all extremely adventurous making this movie. I was physically and mentally aware of my surroundings in a way I never had been before. We were really in the ocean and out in nature! Kayaking into caves, diving, and swimming. Everyday on this film felt like magic. Even though we were working it felt like a dream vacation. We all got our divers certification to do the under water scenes. Now I can add underwater acting to my resume.”

Director Jeff Wadlow was drawn to the script because of the friend group at the center of the movie. “The shark and the cave create the nightmare, but the most interesting part for me was watching how these relationships evolved under that kind of unimaginable pressure,” he said. “The friendships on the page already had so many layers, and then you bring in two powerhouses like Kathryn and Lana, and suddenly no cave or shark is as scary as the friend you’re no longer sure you can trust.”
The cast spends the majority of the movie in the water, which presented huge filmmaking challenges.
“The cast are in the water for most of the movie,” director Jeff Wadlow said. “They’re cold, constantly fighting the environment while trying to perform for the camera. What Kathryn, Lana, Nico, Gavin, Tommi, and Tayme brought to this film is extraordinary. The Thai crew was extraordinary, and our cast gave everything they had. Their talent, resilience, and commitment made this movie possible.”
Can’t wait. I’m ready to watch this movie through my hands covering my eyes!
