Doechii had a huge night at the 2026 BET Awards on Sunday, June 28, and she wasn’t letting anything get her down—even a cut-off acceptance speech.
During last night’s ceremony, the Swamp Princess took home the BET Her award for her track, “girl, get up.” with SZA. As Yung Miami presented the duo with their trophy, they shared a hug on stage and started their speech by fully gushing about each other.
“BET, thank you so, so, so, so much for this award. Y’all don’t understand how hard me and SZA worked putting that record together. It was at a time where, girl, I was going through it,” Doechii started, before thanking SZA for being a comfort to her during a rough time.
“But I’m so glad that you pulled through for me, sister. I just wanna say thank you so much,” she continued, to which the “Kill Bill” hitmaker responded, “Anything for you, always!”
“Y’all, she was literally up till 4 or 5 a.m. writing for me, for us to get that song together. And I thank you so much for believing in me and giving me advice and coaching me and loving me and supporting me. Thank you so much, SZA, I love you,” Doechii continued, before
As SZA tried to step in and give the Florida-raised emcee her flowers, she began to be cut off by a saxophone. The awkward moment was saved by Doechii when she jokingly called out the sax player and asked, “Why they play?”
“I’m gonna keep my time,” Doechii said into the mic, before sharing more exciting news.
“I just wanna say new music is coming soon, and to all the haters that had something to say about me, you better be ready for me to pop back out ’cause I’m coming with a new single and it’s gonna kill everybody,” she added, before further calling out her acceptance speech being cut off. “Don’t ever play with me.”
During the coveted awards ceremony, the duo also paid homage to Ms. Lauryn Hill with a tribute alongside Doja Cat, Nas, and War & Treaty. The “girl, get up.” collaborators’ voices blended beautifully on a rendition of The Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” and they completely smashed it, thank you very much!
All this to say…Doechii handled this awkward moment like the champion she is!
