KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals have submitted a plan to rezone part of downtown Kansas City to create a more than 90-acre ballpark district at the southern edge of Crown Center.
The application was submitted Monday to rezone several Crown Center properties as an urban redevelopment district.

Per the proposal, the ballpark district will be a vibrant mixed-use destination that supports a wide variety of year-round activities – including professional sporting events, concerts, festivals, community gatherings, private events, sponsorship activations and other programmed experiences.

The proposal recommends reconstructing the US-71/22nd Street interchange, I-35/Pennway Street interchange and the I-35 South off-ramp to 20th Street. It also recommends improvements to several local streets.
Essentially, the plan outlines how traffic patterns would need to change to accommodate the ballpark district.
The proposal also says the height of any new building should not exceed the height of any existing district building by more than 30%.
Grand Boulevard will serve as a primary north-south corridor through the district and a connection to downtown Kansas City, Crown Center and surrounding destinations. Pershing Road, Gillham Road and 27th Street will also serve as corridors.
In April, the Royals and Hallmark Cards shared a first look of the nearly $3 billion downtown ballpark district.
