Last year Joyeria released the Graceful Degradation EP, and today the UK-based singer-songwriter is back to announce his debut album Decay Decay Decay. The intriguing lead single “Duller Grey” is out now.
“While the future may have once looked bright (in theory at least, I vaguely remember having this feeling when I was young), the reality of the present often feels like a duller grey where advanced technology is squandered on the precision-targeting of garbage products and ideas,” he explains of the track. “As human rights remain under threat and war disrupts peaceful lives, it is no wonder we retreat into rose-tinted nostalgia as the grey turns to black.”
Speaking of advanced technology and human rights, Decay Decay Decay won’t be on streaming. Here’s what he has to stay about the decision:
I can’t name a single system in any industry where the end goal of that system is the monetization of the user, and that system remains democratic. It makes my stomach turn (as I’m sure it does for 99% of all artists) to think that every time I want to share or promote some music, painting, writing, photography etc… I need to involve some third party tech company as an intermediary. If the system only rewards money and nepotism, it also means it can’t be a meritocracy… so it therefore has no real artistic value.
He’s not the only musician to make this choice; Panda Bear and Sonic Boom’s A ? Of WHEN arrives next month and will only be available physically. “Duller Grey,” though, is on YouTube; check it out below.
