SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WRGB) — Music Haven is returning to Central Park for its 36th season, bringing free performances from acclaimed artists around the world to the Capital Region. Music Haven Director Mona Golub joined CBS6 to preview this summer’s lineup, which features an eclectic mix of music, films and family-friendly events.
“It’s a global destination series,” Golub said. “Really the only one of its kind in the region that brings in national and international touring artists from around the world and across our country and presents them for free in the heart of the park.”
This season’s lineup will take audiences on a musical journey with performances inspired by Afro-Cuban, Dominican and Cape Verdean traditions, along with Celtic music, bluegrass, jazz, blues and a special evening celebrating Louisiana’s musical heritage.
The season also includes a grand symphonic concert and a Broadway tribute performed by the Saratoga Schenectady Symphony Orchestra.
Beyond the Sunday evening concerts, Music Haven is expanding its offerings with several special events throughout the summer, including: A local music festival in partnership with WEXT, An evening of improv comedy featuring The Second City Touring Company, A three-part outdoor film series in partnership with Film Schenectady featuring Michael, Saturday Night Fever and Song Sung Blue.
For first-time visitors, Golub says attending Music Haven is easy.
Parking is available throughout Central Park, and many people also choose to walk to the venue. Food service begins at 6 p.m., an hour before each event, giving concertgoers time to find a seat, meet up with friends and enjoy dinner before the music begins.
In addition to a food truck and concession stand, attendees can often sample ethnic specialties inspired by the featured performers and their home countries.
“It’s really an easygoing atmosphere,” Golub said. “Everyone’s welcome, and we really look forward to seeing people float back into the heart of the park to enjoy and experience another part of the world through music and enjoy themselves with family and friends.”
