Christian worship artist Chris Tomlin made a special appearance at the Trump-endorsed Freedom 250 celebration, participating in a program designed to emphasize faith and patriotism.
Tomlin, a Grammy Award-winning contemporary Christian musician recognized for his song ‘How Great Is Our God and Holy Forever,’ took the stage during the Great American State Fair’s Faith, Values, and Inspiration day on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Event organizers have promoted the 16-day fair as a cornerstone of commemorations celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, featuring exhibitions, military demonstrations, state pavilions and evening entertainment. This comes as a Bachelor runner-up who said “it’s easy to submit to husband” has also joined the Freedom 250 lineup.
However, as Tomlin performed, images and video clips circulating on social media seemed to reveal significant empty spaces throughout the audience area, triggering renewed ridicule of an event already facing scrutiny over attendance figures.
Several social media users characterized the venue as sparsely populated, while administration supporters have maintained the celebration is a free patriotic event spanning an expansive outdoor location.
The backlash follows a turbulent inaugural week for Freedom 250. Trump kicked off the festivities last Wednesday with a campaign-style speech on the Mall, telling supporters, “There has never been anything like the United States of America,” and declaring that “the American Dream is alive again.”
He subsequently asserted on Truth Social that at least 45,000 people were in attendance. Independent reporting and images from the fair have depicted a significantly less busy scene on multiple days.
The Financial Times noted that numerous pavilions experienced sparse foot traffic, with security personnel and media representatives sometimes appearing to outnumber actual attendees.
Fox News faced mockery after a host said “thousands” were celebrating while video footage airing during the segment revealed only scattered visitors.

The entertainment lineup for Freedom 250 has also generated considerable discussion. Multiple musicians withdrew prior to the fair’s opening, citing worries that the event had become too closely associated with Trump, who has attempted to position himself as central to the semiquincentennial festivities.
Vanilla Ice, among the remaining confirmed performers, ultimately had his scheduled appearance scrapped when organizers closed the fair due to inclement weather.
Tomlin’s participation aligned with Wednesday’s faith-centered schedule and came after his earlier involvement in Freedom 250’s May prayer gathering, Rededicate 250.
That gathering assembled conservative Christian figures and Trump administration representatives on the National Mall, prompting objections from certain Democrats and religious freedom proponents who contended the program obscured the separation between church and state.
Event organizers have characterized Freedom 250 as a nationwide, nonpartisan initiative commemorating America’s founding.
