When Indian River County government reporter Colleen Wixon wants a relaxing evening listening to music on the weekend, she heads to the The Loop Kitchen and Bar at Riverside Theatre.
Live at the Loop began in 2012, with one musician to create a fun atmosphere for those attending a summer show at Riverside, according to Marketing Director Oscar Sales. Over the years, the event has expanded to an outdoor stage and a grill with a kitchen area, he said.
The Loop is open year-round where local bands and musicians perform Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Chef Sue Torres was hired last year as executive chef to create a special menu for The Loop.
The Loop is open 5-8 p.m. Thursdays, and 5-8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. It’s also open 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays with a matinee performance.
The Loop at Riverside Theatre is reporter’s favorite hangout

.
While the event is free, food and drinks — with or without alcohol — are available for purchase. Cabanas also can be reserved for the night for a more private setting. Lawn chairs are encouraged for those who just want to enjoy the music and atmosphere.
Q: What is special about this local establishment?
Riverside Theatre is well known for its professional plays, musicals and Comedy Zone performances. The Loop is a place to eat or drink before a performance, or to bring friends for a casual place to enjoy music while eating or having a drink. The crowd size also varies, especially for well-known local bands.
Q: What is it known for? What are the specialties? What sets it apart from other local establishments?
The menu features season special drinks created to represent one of the theatre’s productions. The menu ranges from “small bites” or appetizers to meal items such as teriyaki glazed shrimp and pineapple and a grilled cheeseburger to deserts such as a big cookie and churros. There’s no cover charge, so someone can go just for a drink while listening to the music or for a full meal.
Q: How did you find it?
I am a longtime patron of Riverside Theatre, so I’ve known about the Live at the Loop almost since its inception.
Q: Describe the atmosphere. What will patrons see when they enter?
It’s a fun, low-stress atmosphere. There’s a dance area that gets crowded when the band plays a popular song, or patrons can sit at tables spread around the loop. Staff is friendly and accommodating, making sure they take orders quickly. Staff also will let you know when the kitchen is closing for the night. It’s all outside, unless you reserve a cabana, so not the most fun if it’s cold or raining. The event ends around 8 or 8:30 p.m., depending on when there is a performance inside the theater.
