Rather than escape the weirdness of modern life, this year’s movies have leaned into it. “Out there” has become the unofficial cinematic theme of 2026, both in the literal sense (like the intergalactic adventures of Project Hail Mary and Disclosure Day) and the metaphorical one (like the wicked plot twist in The Drama). Things have been bizarre on the big screen in 2026: Thus far, we’ve encountered groups of friends who steal clothes and time-travel; neighborly dinner parties that get too intimate too fast; and even a post-apocalyptic dance number starring Ralph Fiennes. But ELLE editors have been seated for all of it, popcorn in hand. We equally enjoyed the more grounded films, too—if that’s what you’d call the latest movies starring Woody and Buzz or Andy Sachs and Miranda Priestly.
Before we dive into the second half of the year, let’s take a look back at the best films of 2026 so far.
