Bryan Adams just released a new song for Canada Day, and the rocker’s latest tune is poking fun at America’s president.
The name of the protest song, ‘51st State,’ pretty much says it all. While Adams doesn’t directly mention Donald Trump in the lyrics, it’s clear who this catchy anthem is about. “Never thought I’d see the day. Never thought I’d see the plan. Where everything could get harder for the working man. Yeah, we’re better off together. But we’re better hand in hand. But the 49th parallel has become a line drawn in the sand.”
As if that’s not obvious enough, the track continues, “Let me give it to you straight. When you’re talking about my home. You better show some respect. Cuz up here we take care of our own. So let me give you some advice, mister. You might have too much on your plate. Go’n load us up with tariffs. But we’ll never be the 51st State.”
But that’s not all, “Maybe you’ve forgotten? Maybe you just don’t care. But we always stood beside you for that liberty we share. You can push us to the brink, but where the open roads divides you’ll find a wall of maple with us on the other side.”
Of course, this is far from the Canadian rocker’s first hit. Adams rose to fame in the 1980’s with chart-toppers such as ‘Summer of ‘69’, ‘Straight from the Heart’, Cuts Like a Knife’, ‘Run to You’, and ‘Heaven.’ He followed these with his 1991 album Waking Up the Neighbors, which featured the classic tracks ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It for You’ and ‘Can’t Stop This Thing We Started.’
The musician isn’t the first famous Canadian to publicly speak out against Trump. Last year, after the U.S. raised tariffs to 25% on Canada, the country’s former Prime MinisterJustin Trudeau said, “Canadians are reasonable, and we are polite, but we will not back down from a fight. Not when our country and the well-being of everyone in it is at stake.”
He continued, “We don’t want this. We want to work with you as a friend and an ally. And we don’t want to see you hurt either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. It’s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal. But Donald, they point out that even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do.”
What do Bryan Adams’ fans think about his new protest song?
When the singer posted the protest song on Instagram, fans took to social media to applaud the track. One commenter wrote, “Thank you! Most celebrities are silent for some unfathomable ($) reason but hopefully you inspire more to speak up”, while another said, “Thank you Bryan Adams! Great song! From one fellow Canadian to all Canada. Be Strong. Be Free. Be Proud, Much love to all of you.”
