KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In this episode of The Scruffy City Beat, host Jillian Taylor spoke with Knox Ooze publisher Jared Hagemann, listening to new music released by local artists and discussing new things happening around the city. Singer/songwriter Nancy Ann also joins to discuss her most recent single, “January Snow.” Listen to the full episode here on WBIR.com.

Part 1: New music from local artists

Knox Ooze creator Jared Hagemann returned to The Scruffy City Beat for another look at new things happening around town, where we highlighted some of the latest releases from Knoxville musicians and discussed new developments in the scene.

This episode featured four songs spanning hip-hop, country, and singer-songwriter styles — a snapshot of the wide variety of music being made in East Tennessee.

Of note: We only listened to four songs in this episode, but there are plenty more new releases from local artists. For an even bigger collection, check out the Knox Music Coalition’s Monthly Mixtape playlist on Spotify, which features recent music from East Tennessee musicians.

In this episode:

“Sturdy” by J Bu$h
A reflective hip-hop track inspired by East Tennessee roots from one of Knoxville’s more collaborative artists. J Bu$h also recently announced another single, “Inner Child,” which comes out on July 3.

“Knee High Boots” by Millie Rochelle
A country song from a rising young artist with a full, resonant voice.

“Tinfoil” by Seb Camry
A moody rap song accompanied by a cinematic music video produced by Follow the Leader NYC and The Frame Theory.

“January Snow” by Nancy Ann
An emotional, atmospheric song inspired by a snowstorm in downtown Knoxville and the warmth that can be found in unpacking hidden things.

Part 2: A sit-down with Nancy Ann

Nancy Ann joined the episode to talk about her new single, “January Snow,” the first release in a four-song project with production studio Off the Row Studio.

The song began during one of Knoxville’s winter snowstorms, when Nancy found herself isolated in her downtown apartment reflecting on old memories and writing what eventually became a deeply personal love song.

She also discussed recently signing with Off the Row Studio after a boosted Instagram post caught the attention of the studio’s leadership. The partnership will allow her to release four songs over the remainder of the year while retaining ownership of her music.

Beyond her own career, Nancy serves on the board of the Knox Music Coalition and has become a key connector within Knoxville’s music community, helping artists, festivals and organizations build a stronger local scene.

Part 3: New updates and upcoming events

Hagemann returned for a roundup of recent developments in Knoxville music.

One of the biggest stories is the closure of Club XYZ after more than two decades in business. While another LGBTQ+ bar, CORE Knoxville, remains open, the loss of XYZ marks the end of a longtime fixture in the city’s music and nightlife community.

The episode also touched on Scott West’s upcoming novel, a southern crime novel that also serves as a package for his own life story. We also looked at the continued progress on 808 Knox’s in-the-works venue in South Knoxville, which is expected to become a new home for electronic music while also hosting a variety of touring acts.

To wrap up the episode, we looked ahead to Sunset on Central, Knoxville’s annual multi-venue music festival returning Aug. 29. The lineup has not yet been announced, but performances will once again take place across several venues throughout Happy Holler and the surrounding area.

The full episode is available to stream on WBIR.com, the WBIR+ streaming app and YouTube. New episodes of The Scruffy City Beat are released every other Thursday.
