But their trip has been shrouded in uncertainty regarding their security while they’re in the country. The Duke was waiting for a review by the Risk Management Board (RMB), part of the process by which the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) rules on his security requirements, but learned last Friday that the review had not yet taken place.
Last week, the Sussexes’ spokesperson said: “The duke continues to explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely and to give his children the opportunity to enjoy the UK.”
The Daily Mail’s Editor-at-Large hit out at the couple and their comms team over allegedly not including her outlet in briefings sent to “favoured reporters,” which, according to her, led to everything “falling down”.
She said on the Palace Confidential podcast: “’I went to the Sussexes’ camp on Thursday to tell them what my story about the trip was going to be – and to offer them the chance to come back to me.
“They did not. However, what they did do was make sure that on Friday, they issued an operational note to their favoured reporters to tell them exactly what was happening on every day of the visit.”
She added: “The problem was, the following day, the wheels came off. They started issuing guidance saying: ‘Oh, woops, Harry is now thinking he might not come at all.’ It all just fell down around their ears in an unedifying, chaotic and misbriefed way.”
Ms Boshoff said the main victims of the Sussexes’ “chaos” are King Charles and Prince Harry’s charities, which he was due to support during the trip.
She said: “This has had a really big effect on the charities that Harry confirmed he would be supporting on this visit.” It’s now all up in the air, so that’s exceedingly unhelpful, and I feel sorry for them on a human level.”
She even accused the Sussexes of briefing out false information, including the claim that the King had personally offered his help with their security while in the UK.
Ms Boshoff said: “What you see here looks very much like some attempt to manipulate that situation.
“This is a truly invidious position for the King because he is trying to move forward out of this locked situation where Harry and Meghan feel victimised.
“He’s trying to unlock it, and it’s just absolutely impossible. It’s just the complete opposite of well organised and coordinated.”
