While promoting Thug Life, Kamal Haasan reflected on the dangers of fame, saying that arrogance often becomes a star’s biggest downfall and can gradually distance an actor from reality. Months later, those remarks have resurfaced after one of his former collaborators suggested that the veteran may have succumbed to the very flaw he had cautioned against.
Actor Yatin Karyekar, who shared screen space with Kamal Haasan in Hey Ram and Vasool Raja MBBS, recently claimed that the actor’s growing preoccupation with himself has, over time, had a negative impact on his career.

When Kamal Haasan Sat In Front Of An Aeroplane
During a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Yatin Karyekar alleged that Kamal Haasan has a tendency to spark controversies intentionally to keep public attention on himself. According to the actor, generating headlines has often been part of Kamal’s approach to staying relevant. “I have worked a lot with Kamal Haasan. There are things that one needs to do to create publicity and controversy. People create controversy for publicity. They feel the need to create controversy to stay in the limelight,” he said.
Yatin also recounted an incident from the sets of Hey Ram, claiming Kamal once staged a protest at an airport over a flight delay. He alleged that the actor sat in front of the aircraft and refused to move, an episode that attracted widespread media attention and, in his view, indirectly benefited the film’s publicity. “He once sat in front of the aeroplane and refused to move when the flight was delayed. That created headlines and his movie received publicity. He does that a lot. It is his way of thinking.”
When Kamal Haasan Replaced A Scene
Yatin went on to allege that Kamal Haasan’s perception of his own image also shaped certain creative choices during the filming of Vasool Raja MBBS, the Tamil adaptation of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.. Citing a scene from the remake, he claimed that Kamal was unwilling to recreate a moment from the original film in which Sanjay Dutt’s character is slapped, opting for a different execution instead.
“Kamal Haasan is very self-obsessed. We were shooting for Vasool Raja MBBS. The scene where Jimmy Shergill slaps Sanjay Dutt in the Hindi version was being recreated in Tamil, but he didn’t let that scene happen. He replaced the slap with a push.”
Yatin added that the change had left the assistant director visibly anxious. Recalling his own reaction at the time, he said, “I said, ‘When a Sanjay Dutt can, what is this man’s problem?’”
Yatin also drew a comparison between the Hindi original and its Tamil remake, arguing that the emotional equation between the lead character and his father was significantly altered. He felt the remake lacked a figure with the commanding screen presence that Sunil Dutt brought to Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., resulting in a relationship that leaned more towards comedy than emotional intensity.
Explaining his point, Yatin said, “Nobody could say, ‘Ae, jaa na,’ to Kamal Haasan in the role of his father in the film.”
On the work front, Kamal Haasan is currently producing Dharman, which features Rajinikanth as a ‘bloody doctor’.
