There will be a day—soon, I promise—when Taylor Swift’s wedding is no longer the biggest story in the celebrity news cycle, and you won’t have to hear about it anymore. But that day is very much not today, because today is Taylor Swift’s actual wedding day at what everyone knows is the most romantic place on earth, Madison Square Garden.
Among the big questions about the big day is how on earth she and Travis Kelce will make the venue feel elegant enough to justify their black-tie dress code, and fun enough for their guests to ignore the stale beer smell and the inevitable echoes of a mostly empty arena. (I can’t get that scene from the last season of Hacks out of my head.) Luxury wedding planners estimate it will cost at least $10 million, which is a lot of money to spend on a single weekend—but also, MSG will need a lot of work, so… (Another thing I can’t get out of my head: Are guests going to have to use the regular concourse bathrooms??)
Cargo labeled “Garden Party” was unloaded from trucks outside MSG this week, perhaps giving a hint to the theme, and Page Six snapped some large florals going into the venue. There was also a piece of furniture that very much looked like a bed, which made me wonder if Taylor’s just going to perform the entire Eras tour show for her guests. At least that would justify the MSG of it all!
The festivities kicked off last night with a rehearsal dinner of roughly 100 guests (though Variety has that number at 400) that took place “at MSG’s Infosys Theater,” Page Six reported. Ahh, what a lovely sounding place for an intimate celebration—Infosys would be a beautiful name for a baby girl. The guests included Selena Gomez, who posted from the car on the way there (wearing an AirPod in the cab—relatable); Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper, who carpooled with Ashley Avignone; and Jack and Rachel Antonoff. (Also, I don’t really know where to put this, but it feels somehow relevant to this news that Prince William us on the most recent episode of Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast.)
And just for the record, I will admit I was wrong: It seems more and more likely that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds will indeed not be attending the wedding, given that they were spotted at their daughter’s horse show in Lake Placid, New York, yesterday—more than a four-hour drive from the city. Sure, they could still be heading to Manhattan today, but in the not-so-recent past, Lively would have been chief among the besties at last night’s rehearsal dinner. Looks like you can’t claim Taylor Swift as one of your “dragons” and get away with it!
The info we have so far is mostly based on paparazzi telephoto lenses, or a few select leaked details (apparently wedding invitations came with an NDA… lol). But overall, the security presence is tight: The Hollywood Reporter called it “worthy of Gaddafi” (lol!) and the cops working the event (… lol) were told if they don’t like it, they don’t have to work it—and the streets around MSG have been shut down for a few days, which has prompted some strong “eat the rich” vibes. Perhaps the happy couple got wind of the grumbling, because a Swift rep told People yesterday that she and Kelce have donated a total of $26 million to various charities ahead of their wedding, including $1 million each to New York’s City Harvest, Rhode Island Community Food Bank, and Harvesters, a food bank in Kansas City. Is it a way to manipulate the public narrative? Probably! Is it ultimately also a good thing? Yes!
