The Kansas City Royals hope Salvador Perez‘s sore elbow turns out to be nothing more than a brief interruption. Even if that’s the case, Thursday’s roster move may have revealed where the organization is headed anyway.
Perez was scratched from catching duties Thursday after reporting soreness in his left elbow, prompting Kansas City to select Maile’s contract from Triple-A Omaha and add another catcher before the series finale against Tampa Bay. Manager Matt Quatraro stressed the move was simply about protecting the roster while the club gathers more information, but he also acknowledged there is legitimate concern surrounding the situation.

“Salvy came in yesterday with a little bit of a sore elbow,” Quatraro said, via Anne Rogers of MLB.com. “He was already playing first yesterday, so he was able to manage that. And then today, we had to have some protection in case he’s unable to catch.”
The Royals won’t know more until Perez undergoes further evaluation following Friday’s scheduled off day. For now, Quatraro said the club is still trying to determine exactly what it’s dealing with.
“Right now, we’re trying to gather more information as to what’s going on,” Quatraro said, via Rogers. “He came in yesterday a little sore. Thought it would loosen up during the day, and it didn’t. … Definitely have some level of concern.”
Even if the soreness proves minor, the roster move quietly highlighted a question Kansas City has likely been moving toward for much of the season.

Perez entered Thursday in the middle of one of the toughest offensive seasons of his career. After hitting 30 home runs with 100 RBI in 2025, the Royals captain has managed just a .201/.241/.327 slash line with a 51 wRC+ this season. For a player who has anchored the middle of Kansas City’s lineup for more than a decade, those numbers had already begun shifting the conversation toward how the Royals could best maximize his value going forward.
That conversation doesn’t necessarily revolve around taking Perez’s bat out of the lineup. It may instead be about asking less of him behind the plate.
Jensen is expected to receive the majority of the catching duties while Perez is unavailable, and Maile’s arrival gives Kansas City another experienced option if it decides to ease Perez’s workload once he’s healthy.
While Maile has never been known for his offense, his defensive reputation has kept him in the league for more than a decade — accumulating 17 defensive runs saved during his career.

That defensive profile becomes more relevant when viewed alongside Perez’s own numbers behind the plate this season. He ranks below the 30th percentile in both blocks above average and pop time, while sitting in just the third percentile in framing, a notable decline for a five-time Gold Glove winner.
Kansas City still views Perez as its captain, and there has been no indication the organization plans to reduce his role beyond what’s necessary while his elbow is evaluated. But injuries have a way of speeding up conversations teams eventually know they’re going to have.
With Jensen emerging and Perez trying to work through both physical issues and the most difficult offensive season of his career, Thursday may have offered a glimpse of how Kansas City can best maximize one of the most respected players in franchise history moving forward.
