Have you and your partner ever solved a big argument while brushing your teeth? If you have, you’re in good company. In a recent interview with People, Rita Wilson explained that a shared bathroom is her and Tom Hanks’s secret to a happy 38-year marriage.
‘This is a deep secret,’ Rita laughs. Though a well-designed bathroom idea may have something to do with the psychology behind her trick, the real magic lies in the built-in quality time of a shared morning and evening ritual.
She explains: ‘It’s very good. That’s where you download everything. That’s where you download the day. You laugh about what you’re doing in the mornings. You’re thinking about “What are you doing today?” “Where are you going to be? “Great, I’ll meet you there.”‘
‘That’s the worst answer, but it’s actually very true,’ she jokes.
So, how do you make the bathroom a reliable space where you actually want to connect? Especially if you plan to combine two individual bathrooms into one shared space, clever bathroom storage is the simplest way to make sure this essential space is free from chaos and stress, helping to facilitate a peaceful relationship.
Waleed Shahid, Design Director at Royal Bathrooms, explains: ‘Bathrooms are naturally practical spaces, but that does not mean the furniture has to feel purely functional. The real beauty of investing in good bathroom storage is that it works hard every single day. Drawers and cupboards help keep toiletries, towels and everyday essentials hidden away, which instantly makes the room feel calmer and more organized. That is especially important in busy family bathrooms, where surfaces can quickly become cluttered.’
Shop The Bathroom Storage Edit
The trick to successfully sharing a bathroom with a partner is lots, and lots, and lots of storage. These clever pieces will help you keep everything perfectly organized for harmonious mornings and evenings. Whether it’s a clever IKEA storage buy or an elevated West Elm shelf, they’re all designed with function and style in mind.
Katy Pedestal Sink Organizer
If you have a pedestal sink (or two), this clever shelf makes it so much more functional. This genius organizer provides 2 deep shelves and extra hanging space for washcloths and hand towels. It holds up to 10lbs of bathroom clutter, too.
3-Pack Seagrass Storage Baskets
Baskets are a great way to get organized in any room of your home, but I particularly love these chic seagrass baskets from H&M that are slightly softer than more structured box-shaped ones for the bathroom. They can be tucked under a cabinet, but are pretty enough to leave out on the shelves.
Beautiful Mirrored Medicine Cabinet
With mirrored doors and a wood frame, this contemporary update on an essential bathroom item, the medicine cabinet, is a style upgrade. The adjustable shelves make it easy to customize your storage, while the curved corners give the mirror a retro-inspired feel.
Modern Overhang Bathroom Shelf
If you need a bit more space than a single shelf can provide, this triple shelf design is so chic. This classic brass finish stood out to me, but it’s also available in matte black or chrome, if they are more suited to your bathroom style.
Willa Arlo™ Interiors Brodnax Vanity
This white bathroom vanity gives you the best of closed and open storage in one compact design. Two drawers maximize space for essentials you don’t want on display, while the shelf below is the perfect size for pretty baskets.
This towel rack from Pottery Barn is the perfect way to store towels in your bathroom. The top rack holds rolled-up towels or baskets, and your shower towel can hang ready to use.
