After a four-year hiatus from the stage due to JBJ’s vocal cord surgeries — save for a handful of one-off gigs — the group played the first of their nine (!) ‘Forever Tour’ concerts at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, July 7.
Set List FM reports the 2018 Rock Hall of Fame inductees performed 21 songs. As expected, fan favorites like “Livin’ On A Prayer,” “It’s My Life,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “Bad Medicine” and “You Give Love A Bad Name” all made the cut.
They also brought “I’ll Be There For You,” “Born To Be My Baby,” “Have a Nice Day,” “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” and a cover of The Beatles’ classic “With A Little Help From My Friends” (which opened the show) to the stage.
Critics were impressed given the circumstances.
USA Today claimed “Bon Jovi [reclaimed] his voice.”
“There was still grit, conviction, and plenty of power behind his delivery, even if the pitch occasionally drifted from where longtime fans remember it,” Consequence noted. “More importantly, he never tried to pretend that nothing had changed.”
“[He] sounded leaps and bounds better on Tuesday than he did at the end of the band’s 2022 tour, articulating his notes better and enunciating his lyrics more clearly,” Ultimate Classic Rock reported. “Backed by his bandmates’ masterful harmonies, he felt emboldened to reach for more high notes, and when he didn’t, he could count on the audience to pick up the slack, happy to indulge him in as many singalongs as he wanted.”
