Grammy-nominated songstress Bonnie Tyler, known for her hit songs “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” has tragically passed away at the age of 75.
On July 9, Tyler’s Instagram announced her passing, saying, “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

In May, she went in for emergency intestinal surgery and was later placed in an induced coma in the town where she resided, Faro, Portugal. She was placed in the intensive care unit (ICU), and according to Page Six, she suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated.
In June, she wasn’t in a coma anymore but remained critically ill until her passing on July 8.
She is survived by her husband of 50+ years, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973. They have no children. However, Tyler had six siblings and lots of nieces and nephews, and she adored being the col aunt to them.
She even spoke about her husband and family in a 2012 interview with The Guardian. She said, “I married Robert, my first serious boyfriend, in 1973, when I was 22. We dated for four years before that and we have now been married for 39 years. I am still very much in love with him and he with me. We never fall out. He is very easy on the eye, which helps. Alas, we didn’t get to have our own family. What happened was that when we got married we said we’d wait seven years before starting our own, but by that time my career was massive. We put it off and put it off until I was 39 and he was 41. I suddenly felt maternal then, so it just felt the right time. I got pregnant very quickly but after two and a half months, I miscarried, which was bloody awful at the time. We tried again but after two years nothing had happened so we just thought it wasn’t meant to be.”
Tyler added, “I have a large family anyway. I have five godchildren, 16 nieces and nephews, and 12 great nieces and nephews, so there is no shortage of children in my life.”
Along with being a legendary songstress, Tyler was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022 and was nominated for three Grammys for her songs: “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” her album Faster Than the Speed of Night, and “Here She Comes.”
