A viral cake drop at the wedding of Anna Boden and her husband, Oliver, was a staged prank rehearsed ahead of time, her father has revealed
“Anna and Ollie’s wedding was a lovely family day but I have a terrible confession to make: the cake drop was staged,” Boden founder Johnnie Boden revealed of his daughter’s nuptials
The stunt featured actors as caterers who dropped the cake and later led guests in song, Johnnie revealed on Thursday
Wedding photographers captured the viral moment that caterers dropped a couple’s cake on their big day — and now, the father of the bride has revealed that the cake drop was part of a sweet, staged moment that was “rehearsed to within an inch of its life.”
Anna Boden — the daughter of Boden fashion brand founder Johnnie Boden — and her new husband, Oliver, first garnered attention for their wedding day celebrations in the English countryside after video footage and photos shared to social media on Thursday, July 2 captured the moment two caterers slipped and dropped the couple’s multi-tiered cake down a set of stairs.

“My daughter Anna’s wedding to her new husband Ollie was a wonderful celebration,” father of the bride Johnnie wrote in his original Instagram post alongside video of the chaotic moment and the aftermath, in which the family’s terrier got to work eating the buttercream that had spilled onto the lawn of the Dorset, U.K., property.
The footage quickly garnered tons of attention online, even being included in the couple’s wedding write-up in the Times and the Daily Mail — and by Thursday, July 9, Johnnie opted to set the record straight.

“We have been overwhelmed by the interest in this story,” Johnnie wrote on Instagram of the incident, which he referred to as “cakegate.” He revealed, “Anna and Ollie’s wedding was a lovely family day but I have a terrible confession to make: the cake drop was staged.”
“Every minute was rehearsed to within an inch of its life,” he continued. “The waiters (who led us in song after dropping the cake) were brilliant actors. The cake was filled with extra cream to create a bigger splat.”
Footage showed the two “caterers,” wearing matching pink striped aprons, grabbing microphones during the incident as the wedding attendees laughed in surprise at the stunt.

“No one was hurt and Janet (Welsh terrier) only got one small mouthful. Above all, everyone was fooled although a couple of fibbers claimed they knew it was a prank,” the designer added in the post’s caption.

According to the Times, Anna, a teacher in West London, is the eldest of Johnnie and wife Sophie’s three daughters.

Other photos and videos from the stylish nuptials also showed Anna, 31, wearing a polka-dotted veil as Johnnie, 65, walked her down the aisle, as well as the bride and groom riding horses to their reception. Anna could be seen wearing white Converse sneakers under her satin gown, while Oliver, who works in wealth management, donned a classic black suit with a green waistcoat.
“The Boden family would love to thank everyone who made it such a memorable day,” the fashion mogul added in his original post. “Lots of joyful tears were shed, not least by me.”
