New York Mets first baseman/designated hitter Mark Vientos is headed to the injured list after fracturing a bone in his right hand, manager Andy Green confirmed following a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals.
Vientos was hit by an 0-1 fastball from Michael Wacha, which rode inside and plunked the 26-year-old. It was apparent instantly that the injury was serious, as Vientos staggered back from the plate before falling in agony to the grass. He was immediately lifted from the game.
It prompted Green to shuffle up his lineup, moving AJ Ewing from center field to second base and Brett Baty from second to third. Tyrone Taylor entered the game to take over for Ewing in center.
This injury is just the latest hurdle of what has become yet another challenging season for Vientos, who has still not been able to regain the brilliance that made him a breakout star in 2024, when he smacked 27 home runs. In 72 games this season, he was batting .211 with a .641 OPS, 11 home runs, and 35 RBI.
