LONDON — King Charles III met Prince Harry, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and their two children on Friday in the family’s first reunion in years, marking a significant step toward repairing long-standing tensions within the British royal family.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that Harry, Meghan, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet met the King and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House, the monarch’s country residence in western England.
Harry arrived in the United Kingdom earlier this week for a series of charity engagements, prompting widespread speculation over whether he would meet his father and whether Meghan and their children would join him.
The reunion came despite the King’s tightly scheduled calendar and the family’s limited time in Britain before the children’s return to school in California.
Harry’s visit was overshadowed by reports of confusion over accommodation arrangements after Buckingham Palace initially invited him to stay at the palace before the offer was withdrawn when he did not respond in time.
The trip also coincided with a legal setback for Harry after a British judge dismissed his privacy lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mail, ruling that he had failed to prove his claims.
Harry has repeatedly expressed a desire to reconcile with his father, who is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.
The two last met briefly in September during Harry’s previous visit to London, their first meeting in more than a year.
The Duke of Sussex has also said he wanted Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, to spend time with their grandfather. The children previously met the King during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
No photographs of Friday’s family gathering will be released, as the meeting was held in private.
Relations within the royal family have remained strained since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California. The rift deepened following Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” in which he made a series of allegations about the royal family and its relationship with the British media.
Despite the tensions, Harry has repeatedly said he hopes to rebuild ties with his family, describing reconciliation as more important than continuing the dispute. Friday’s meeting is viewed as a significant step in that process.
