Scott Bryce, As the World Turns’ original Craig Montgomery who played the cunning anti-hero across three decades, has died. He was 68.
News of Bryce’s death was first announced on Sunday by his longtime friend Lucie Arnaz — the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz — who paid tribute to Bryce in a now-deleted Facebook post, per soap journalist Michael Fairman’s website.
“A wonderful actor, a beautiful man and a terrific husband and father, Scott Bryce, passed tonight,” Arnaz began her post. “I am going to miss his eyes, his smile, his wit, his brain, his intelligence, his talent, his bravery, his laugh and his hugs. Dearest Jodi, dear Jackson, he’s watching over you now from a place of pure joy and will always be your guide. But I hate these goodbyes. Rest in peace you marvelous, magnificent man.”

Bryce was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal and stomach cancer in 2025. The actor underwent treatment and later assured fans that he was “on the mend.” However, Arnaz stated that the cancer returned in her post.
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives of Bryce for comment.
Born Jan. 6, 1958 in New York City, Bryce followed in the footsteps of his father, Ed Bryce, a soap star himself who appeared on such shows as Another World, Somerset, and Loving in addition to his longtime gig as Guiding Light‘s Bill Bauer, from 1959 to 1983.
Bryce debuted on As the World Turns in 1982 as the charming but oft self-destructive Craig Montgomery, known for his manipulative schemes and unlucky romances. He was at one point paired with Meg Ryan’s Betsy, despite her love for Frank Runyeon’s Steve Andropoulos. The plot line marked one of the show’s most infamous love triangles. Craig and Betsy eventually going their separate ways, paving the way for her to reignite her romance with Steve.
Bryce would remain with the show until 1991, but returned from 1993 to 1994 and again from 2007 to 2008. During his tenure, Bryce received Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1986 and 1987.

Bryce additionally appeared on episodes of Blue Bloods, Homeland, 30 Rock, Sex and the City, The Golden Girls, and more. His most recent acting role was on an episode of The Blacklist in 2021.
Bryce is survived by wife Jodi Stevens, who he wed in 2003, and their son, Jackson.
