Answer: This longtime game show announcer turned 98 on Monday.
Who is Jeopardy‘s Johnny Gilbert?
“A very happy birthday to our legendary announcer, Johnny Gilbert 🥳🎂” the official Jeopardy Instagram wrote in a post shared Monday, accompanied by a photo of Gilbert in his trademark, fire engine red Jeopardy jacket smiling while holding a microphone close to his chest.
With Alex Trebek’s death at age 80 in 2020, Gilbert is one of the last remaining ties to Jeopardy‘s origins. Born John Lewis Gilbert III on July 13, 1928, Gilbert worked in the Army Special Services, sang and danced in musicals, hosted the game show Music Bingo, and even anchored his own regional talk show before getting the call to join the Jeopardy team.
The series premiered in daytime on NBC in 1964, where it ran through 1975. After an initial revival concluded a one-year run in 1979, Jeopardy was picked up in syndication in 1984 with Trebek as host and Gilbert as announcer. He has served in the post ever since, making him one of the longest continually working game show presenters in TV history.

Gilbert weathered the turbulent period following Trebek’s death when Jeopardy was searching for a full-time replacement. Candidates like actress Mayim Bialik, newsman Anderson Cooper, and Reading Rainbow star LeVar Burton.
Past super-champion Ken Jennings officially stepped into the role of co-host with Bialik in 2022, and became full host after she stepped down in 2023. Gilbert now works with Jennings five days a week keeping the Jeopardy ball rolling.

In a 2022 interview, Gilbert remarked that “family is a good word” to describe the Jeopardy crew.
“The thing about Jeopardy‘s family, and has been for so many years, is that the show was so popular. So it’s a special thing,” he said. “That’s why so many of our members, crew members are still with us many, many, many years later. They’re still with us.”
