Have you heard of this cool new artist named Madonna? That’s the joke that’s been circulating the internet these past few weeks as the Queen of Pop has promoted her new album, Confessions II. After one viral meme showed an internet search falsely claiming that the 67-year-old pop legend was only 16 years of age, social media users took the joke and ran with it. In part, this can be seen as a satire of our digital age, where misinformation spreads like wildfire and Gen Alpha knows less and less about pop culture icons, and more about all the newest rising acts. On the other hand, the meme captures, albeit in a silly way, the fact that Madonna has consistently reinvented herself. From her country Music LP to the disco-inflected grooves of the original Confessions, Madge helped establish the concept of musical “eras,” birthing new iterations of herself again and again.
Yesterday morning, we were reminded of the Material Girl’s powers once more, when news broke that she received her 10th number-one album on the Billboard 200. Confessions II debuted with 134,000 equivalent album units sold, and with this achievement, Madonna becomes the first act to achieve a no. 1 album in the 2020s, as well as in three other decades. Not to mention, she also becomes the fourth act in history to rack up both 10-plus chart-topping albums and songs on the Hot 100. Now that’s mother behavior.
Part of the success of Confessions II can be attributed to its unconventional press cycle. In the lead-up to the album release, Madonna did everything from offer a special vinyl variant through the dating app Grindr, to holding a surprise performance in the middle of Times Square. On a grander scale, she also hosted buzzy “Club Confessions” parties around the world.
On Saturday night, the latest Club Confessions was held in New York City, at the Knockdown Center in Brooklyn, which acted as the perfect preemptive celebration for Madonna’s latest artistic achievement.
In partnership with Absolut and Mistr, the NYC dance event featured performances from not only the Queen of Pop, but also Honey Dijon, Stuart Price, Fcukers, Junior Sanchez, and Sam-E.
Starry attendees included the likes of Kim Petras, Andrew Scott, Frankie Grande, and Debi Mazar, who joined throngs of gays, girls, and dolls as they danced the night away in a sweaty, rave-like atmosphere.
The line to get into the venue stretched blocks down the street, and once inside, it was almost impossible to see the stage, as partygoers clamored to get shots of Madonna. Clearly, after all these years, Madge has still got it.
When she took the stage, Madonna wore a metallic pink jacket and matching miniskirt, with knee-high, lace-up boots to match. “New York, I love you so much,” she screamed at the crowd. “But are you ready?!”
Truth be told, the world has never been ready for Madonna. Part of the magic of her career has been in her ability to shock, surprise, and amaze us at every turn. And if we’re lucky, she’ll continue to give us these surprises, and perfect dance-floor fodder, for many more years to come.
