In Rosie O’Donnell‘s mind, Larry David must feel a certain way about playing matchmaker to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cheryl Hines.
In an interview with Variety published Thursday, O’Donnell stated that she assumes self-professed liberal Democrat David “regrets” setting them up knowing now how troubling RFK Jr.’s rhetoric is as the United States secretary of health and human services.
When interviewer Marlow Stern noted that it’s “wild” that David was the one who introduced his Curb Your Enthusiasm costar Hines to RFK Jr., O’Donnell responded, “Yeah, and I’m sure it’s a moment he regrets.”
“Listen,” she continued about RFK Jr., “That man is a lunatic; his own family says so. He tried to get on Kamala Harris’ campaign first, and when she said, ‘No, thank you,’ he went over to [President Donald] Trump. What kind of self-respect or dignity does he have to do that? To defile the legacy of his family and that family name is sickening, and turns my stomach. I think he’s a very dangerous, very selfish, very uneducated man who’s gotten away with so much privilege that he doesn’t even know what to do with himself.”
David introduced Hines to RFK Jr. at a celebrity ski event in Aspen in the mid-2000s. When RFK Jr. later reached out to David to ask for his “permission” to date his television wife, David reportedly told Hines it was a “terrible idea” and that it wouldn’t work out.
The former TV couple haven’t spoken since the series’ finale in April 2024, with Hines admitting to NewsNation last December, “I think he’s mad … because Bobby’s in the administration.”
“I actually think I would be fine talking to Larry,” Hines added. “Somebody asked me, ‘What would happen if you walked into a restaurant and he was there?’ I would be happy to see him, and I’d say hi, and we’d talk for a second … I’m sure things would be fine with us. And at the same time, I’m sure he’s not happy about politics.”

O’Donnell, who appeared on Curb a few times and admitted to playing poker with Hines “a lot,” also discussed her one-woman show Common Knowledge with Variety and agreed that it is, in part, a love letter to autistic children and their parents. (O’Donnell’s 13-year-old child Clay was diagnosed with the condition at age 2.)
But as the topic was mentioned, so was RFK Jr., who has shared controversial takes on autism — what he considers a preventable, environmentally driven “epidemic.”
“[He is painting those with autism as] valueless! Such horrible things,” O’Donnell said. “It’s a community that I’m a member of, and have tremendous respect for. Parents of autistic children have helped me in my journey as a parent of an autistic child. There were things occurring, like full sentences at 10 months old, that never occurred with my other children, so I knew we were onto something.”
O’Donnell shared Clay with her late ex-wife Michelle Rounds and also has four adult children with ex-wife Kelli Carpenter — Parker, Chelsea, Blake, and Vivienne.
Of Common Knowledge, the former talk show host told Variety, “I wanted to talk about the joy of my child and how brilliant this child is, as well as some of the challenges. I didn’t want it to be the story of the ‘tragedy of autism,’ because if you’re ready to be a parent, you’re ready to accept whatever you child comes with; and if you’re not ready to accept whatever your child comes with, don’t be a parent. I wanted to show autism in a different way than it’s portrayed, and I feel strongly about standing up for my most vulnerable child.”

The synopsis of the off-Broadway show, opening July 22, reads: “Now living in her newly adopted hometown of Dublin, Ireland, Rosie reflects on the move, the culture shift, family life, and the humbling and hilarious realization that maybe she doesn’t have it all figured out.”
Common Knowledge runs July 22 to Aug. 8 at the Daryl Roth Theatre.
