The matter of security has become a big concern around the Today show ever since Nancy Guthrie, Savannah Guthrie’s mom, was forcibly taken from her home sometime between the night of January 31 and the morning of February 1. The investigation is still open, but so far, police have not identified a suspect or disclosed a motive.
So, of course, after an intruder didn’t just manage to get on set but close enough to lunge at Guthrie’s co-host Craig Melvin, some questions were raised. And Hollywood insider Rob Shuter is reporting that Savannah was deeply shaken by what happened.

“How much more can one person take?” one NBC insider told Shuter. “After everything Savannah has endured with her family, this happened just moments after she walked off the set. It hit everyone hard, but it hit differently because of her.”
This all comes as Guthrie is set to take a few weeks off the show, something she announced on the July 16 show. “We’re about to do it. Guys, I’m headed over to shoot Wordle over the next few weeks,” Guthrie said about the upcoming game show. “We’re going to shoot the whole season and we’re super excited.”
She added, “I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’ll probably air, I think, in the new year.”
“We’re going to lose you for a minute, though,” Craig Melvin said.
No date for Guthrie’s return was announced.
And after the recent altercation on set, some are wondering if Guthrie will take more time. “Nobody would blame Savannah if she decided she needed more time,” a second source told Shuter. “She’s been carrying an enormous emotional burden, and this was another shock. The feeling inside the show is that everyone wants her to put herself first.”
NBC reportedly launched a review of its security protocols after the breach.
“This wasn’t just a security failure—it was a reminder that nowhere feels completely safe anymore,” an insider explained. “Everyone is asking the same question: if this could happen here, what happens next?”
Guthrie took a leave of absence from the show after her mother’s disappearance, but returned in April, telling people it was “good to be back home.”
“You guys have been so beautiful,” Guthrie told the fans gathered on Rockefeller Plaza upon her return. “I’ve received so many letters, so much kindness to me and my whole family. We feel it. We feel your prayers, so thank you so much.”
The whole ordeal has reportedly left everyone on the show feeling protective of Guthrie, which is why the issue with the intruder has hit so hard after everyone has done their best to try to make the set a safe environment for her. “The whole newsroom is protective of Savannah right now,” one source told Naughty But Nice. “People are worried less about the show and more about her. They just want her to be okay.”
