Luke Wilson reflected on the surprising longevity of The Family Stone as a holiday favorite over the years
A sequel to the film is in development, with writer-director Thomas Bezucha addressing Diane Keaton’s absence
Wilson praised the sequel’s script and shared excitement about reuniting with the original cast for the project
Luke Wilson didn’t expect The Family Stone to still be a fan favorite over 20 years later.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 54-year-old actor, who recently welcomed his first child, shared his thoughts on what made the movie so beloved in the first place and gave an update on its sequel.
“It’s one of those movies where, when it came out, you know, it’s just one of those things when, over the years, more people mentioned it to me, and then families would say ‘We watch it at Christmas’ or ‘We watch it at Thanksgiving.’ It really caught me by surprise,” Wilson admitted.

In addition to Wilson, the holiday comedy starred Rachel McAdams, Craig T. Nelson, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Elizabeth Reaser, Ty Giordano, Brian White, Paul Schneider and the late Diane Keaton.
After the passing of Keaton, writer and director Thomas Bezucha announced that he was planning a sequel to the movie, telling celebrity.land that he’s working on a follow-up. The Christmas classic starred Keaton as Sybil Stone, the matriarch, whose breast cancer diagnosis looms over their family reunion.
“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha, 62, said. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”

When asked about the sequel, Wilson told ET, “I can’t believe it’s happening, but it is.”
“Tom Bezucha is a great writer and a great director, and I read the script, and it’s really funny, and it’s so nice that everybody wants to work together again,” he shared. “And I think you know, after the death of Diane Keaton, it’ll be even more meaningful because she was so great to be around on the first one.”
Mulroney, meanwhile, shared on The Tangle podcast in May 2026 that he believes the sequel will be called The Families Stone.
“Everyone’s up for returning. I can be on record,” Mulroney said.
