MURRAY, KY — Murray State is taking the first steps toward developing a new athletics and entertainment district that university leaders believe could create new opportunities for the athletic department, campus and the surrounding community.

The Racer Entertainment Village (REV) is a planned mixed-use development that would combine athletic experiences with restaurants, retail, entertainment, housing and other commercial opportunities on 32 acres within the footprint of Murray State’s athletics sports park.

The project is still in the early planning stages, meaning many of the final details, including what will be built and when development could begin, have not been determined.

To help answer those questions, Murray State Athletics selected Campbell Coyle to lead a feasibility study and implementation roadmap for the future Racer Entertainment Village.

The company will evaluate what parts of the vision are realistic, including market demand, financial sustainability, infrastructure needs and potential development opportunities.

Athletic Director Nico Yantko said the project is about preparing Murray State for the future of college athletics while also creating something that impacts more than just sports.

“The emphasis around Racer Entertainment Village is not only about new revenue stream opportunities, retail opportunities and entertainment, but creating true revenue that is more sustainable than your traditional athletic footprint revenue opportunities and cycles,” Yantko said.

The development is part of Murray State’s effort to adapt to the changing landscape of college athletics, where programs are searching for new ways to create resources and long-term sustainability.

“We’re building an enterprise where college athletics is going,” Yantko said. “We’re not waiting for it to happen. We’re taking the pen and we’re writing the next chapter.”

So what exactly could Racer Entertainment Village look like?

Because the project is still in the feasibility stage, there are no final plans in place. However, Yantko said Murray State is exploring a variety of possibilities, including restaurants, retail spaces, mixed-use housing, entertainment options, hotels and potentially convention space.

“Some of the things that we’re exploring are retail arms, mixed-use development with apartments, maybe condos, entertainment drivers, and what we’re looking at are unique restaurant flavors, things that create a very centralized entertainment village that families, friends, students and all are welcome in this live-work-play-cheer concept,” Yantko said.

The goal is to create a destination that goes beyond traditional athletic facilities and gives students, fans and community members a place to gather year-round.

“We want great connectivity, more than just buildings,” Yantko said. “We want things that drive folks here to ride their bike and be a part of this truly centralized arm.”

While athletics will serve as the anchor of the project, Murray State leaders believe the impact could extend well beyond game days.

For the athletic department, the development could provide additional revenue opportunities while also helping enhance the overall Racer experience.

“Our job, not the most important thing that happens on the campus, but we are the most visible, and our commercial opportunities are the greatest,” Yantko said. “This puts us in a great scenario where we can drive this entertainment village that will ultimately help attract new students and businesses to the community and retain those same individuals and companies.”

For Murray State coaches, the project represents another opportunity to improve the student-athlete experience and strengthen the connection between teams and the Racer community.

Women’s basketball head coach Rechelle Turner said the project could have an impact that reaches beyond athletics.

“Racer Entertainment Village is much more than a new development. It is a transformative investment in the future of Murray State University,” Turner said. “This project will enhance the student-athlete experience, create new opportunities for our community, and improve the long-term sustainability of our athletic department.”

Men’s basketball head coach Ryan Miller believes the project could also help create a stronger atmosphere around Racer Athletics.

“We’re excited about what this project means for the future of Murray State Athletics and our basketball program,” Miller said. “Creating an enhanced game-day atmosphere and investing in an experience that brings our fans, alumni and community together is a tremendous vision.”

University leaders believe the project could also play a role in the continued growth of Murray State and the surrounding region.

Murray State President Dr. Ron Patterson called the development a transformational investment in both the university and community.

“In a small college town, projects like the Racer Entertainment Village create energy, opportunity and connection for our students and community members,” Patterson said.

The Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce also sees the project as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the university and the community.

“Strong communities are built through thoughtful investments that bring people together,” Chamber President and CEO Michelle Bundren said. “We’re excited to see Murray State Athletics exploring opportunities like Racer Entertainment Village that can enhance quality of life, support economic growth, and further strengthen the partnership between the university and our business community.”

As the feasibility study moves forward, Murray State will determine which parts of the vision can become reality and what a potential timeline could look like.

For now, Racer Entertainment Village remains in the planning stage, but university leaders believe the project could create a stronger connection between Murray State Athletics, campus and the community for years to come.
