Kansas City Royals veteran catcher Salvador Perez’s latest milestone on Wednesday was overshadowed by a fan who jumped into the fountains at Kauffman Stadium to retrieve the historic home run ball during the team’s 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Perez’s 437-foot blast to right-center field in the seventh inning was his 14th home run of the season and the 317th of his career, tying Hall of Famer George Brett for the most home runs in franchise history. Brett had held the record by himself for the last 40 years.

The ball landed in the fountains, where a fan entered the water to recover it before security escorted him from the stadium. Police then took the fan into custody, with photos from the ballpark showing him in handcuffs.

Anyone entering the fountains is subject to immediate arrest, transportation to the police station, and prosecution, according to the Royals’ ballpark rules.

Following the game, Perez asked authorities to show leniency.

“Please, police, just take care of the job please and send him home,” he said. “If I was him, I’d maybe jump too and try to get that ball, so please. And thank you for the hard work in trying to get that ball.”

The fan has since been released, according to Fox 4 Kansas City.

Perez also said he was happy that the record-tying home run came in Kansas City in front of the home crowd. The 36-year-old has spent all 15 seasons of his major league career with the Royals after debuting in 2011 and remains under contract through the 2027 season following a two-year extension signed before the season.

Kansas City’s comeback victory included a 17-game hitting streak extension for Vinnie Pasquantino, whose seventh-inning double sparked the rally. After Perez’s game-tying homer, Nick Loftin followed with an RBI single before Lane Thomas broke the tie with a two-run single. Seth Lugo earned the win after allowing three hits, two walks and recording five strikeouts, while Steven Cruz picked up his first career save despite surrendering a late two-out home run.

Perez’s next home run will move him past Brett and give him sole possession of the Royals’ all-time franchise home run record with 59 games remaining in the season.
