Lupita Nyong’o partnered with Crate & Barrel to redesign her home after living there for three years
She prioritized creating clutter-free yet cozy indoor spaces and outdoor areas that harmonize with the surrounding scenery
Her favorite spot is a balcony with a new love seat where she enjoys tea and sunsets
Lupita Nyong’o is sharing a look inside her newly-outfitted Los Angeles home!
The Odyssey star, 43, partnered with the Design Desk at Crate & Barrel to transform her abode and make it feel like a true reflection of herself.
Nyong’o had been living there for three years when she chose to reimagine certain indoor spaces in her home to be “clutter-free, but still cozy,” while turning her outdoor spaces into a place for entertaining that was still “in harmony with its surroundings,” per the furniture and decor company.
Her home’s stunning surrounding scenery played a big role in the transformation, both with the interior and exterior spaces, she says.

“I wanted the outdoors to be the art in the room, so I craved a seating arrangement that let everyone soak in the view. Now it finally feels the way I have wanted it to since I moved in: lived-in, inviting, a place where I can relax,” she told Crate & Barrel of her living room transformation.
Nyong’o said she held off on the redesign for a few years because she believes it’s important to “live in your space before you design it” while speaking with Elle Decor about the makeover.
“I had been living in the house for a beat and getting to know the space,” she continued. “The house had beautiful bones and gorgeous views, but it felt hollow and I was longing for it to feel cozy.”
All that waiting paid off, as she was eventually left with a clear vision of the feelings she wanted her home to evoke through design.

“I like to be in a spacious, airy, clutter-free environment, but that sort of comfort and coziness is something I like to find all the same. What I wanted most for my home was for it to feel like a respite from the world. I wanted it to feel like a retreat,” she added.
Nyong’o tells the outlet that she drew her inspiration from a mood board she put together based on things she saw “from various online magazines.” She’s also heavily inspired by literature, she adds.

As for her favorite spot in her home, the star highlighted one of her outdoor spaces as her go-to escape.
“I had been fantasizing about sitting on my balcony with a cup of tea and watching the sunset. I didn’t have a comfortable place to do it before—I just had like a rickety wooden bench. And now I have this beautiful outdoor love seat that I get to sit on and have my idyllic cup of tea,” she shares.
