Mel Brooks made his first-ever San Diego Comic-Con appearance (sort of) at 100!
Brooks, who reached centenarian status when he celebrated his birthday on June 28, appeared in video footage during Spaceballs: The New One‘s Comic-Con presentation while actors Josh Gad, Rick Moranis, Lewis Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and Keke Palmer presented new footage from the movie and discussed the sequel to Brooks’ 1987 Star Wars spoof.
The presentation in San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H kicked off with a video featuring Brooks, who had plenty of jokes about not appearing in person.
“I’ve done a lot of things in my career, but not Comic-Con. Maybe that’s because they don’t pay,” he quipped in the clip.

Throughout the panel, Gad, 45, Moranis, 73, and the film’s cast members spoke with humorous reverence about working with Brooks on the project.
“I don’t know what gave me the balls to do this, but I called up Mel Brooks and his producing partner, Kevin Salter, who’s in the audience, and I did the most intense 40-minute pitch of this movie, and he’s just silently listening,” Gad said during the panel. “This is in 2022. At the end of it, he goes, ‘Josh, it sounds like you really got your finger on the pulse. I don’t know half of what you’re talking about, but I really like it.’ I was mentioning The Force Awakens and Kylo Ren and he’s like, ‘What the hell is all that?’ ”
Spaceballs is primarily a parody of the original Star Wars trilogy, as well as other popular science fiction movies from the late 20th century. Gad first announced that he was working on a sequel with Brooks in 2024. In June 2025, Amazon MGM Studios announced that Brooks would reprise his role as Yogurt, the gold-skinned parody of the Star Wars character Yoda. Brooks also portrayed the Emperor Palpatine-inspired character President Skroob in the original movie.
Amazon MGM Studios also announced that Moranis would reprise his role as the Darth Vader parody Dark Helmet in September 2025. Bill Pullman, who played the Han Solo/Luke Skywalker parody character Lone Starr in the original movie, will also reprise his role alongside his son Lewis Pullman, as well as Zuniga’s Princess Vespa and George Wyner’s Colonel Sandurz. The movie’s new cast members include Palmer and Anthony Carrigan.

In April, Brooks appeared in a video announcement shared on social media in which he shared that the title of the Spaceballs sequel would not be The Search for More Money, as his character Yogurt jokes in the original film.
“Why not? Because after all these years, I found the money,” Brooks said in the video, as a camera panned to a duffel bag full of cash. “There it is, the money. It was in the basement. But everywhere I go, people say ‘Mel! Mel! When are you going to make the new Spaceballs? When are you going to make the new one?’ Well, we did it, and the title is: Spaceballs: The New One. It’s just like the old one, but it’s newer. That’s why it’s called The New One.”
Spaceballs: The New One is in theaters April 23, 2027.
