21 Savage’s ‘nephew,’ Seven Shirley, tragically died by suicide following the accidental shooting of his younger sister, Lyric. The rapper made a tribute post to Seven following the news
21 Savage is grieving over the death of his “nephew,” Seven Shirley.
Seven, 14, died by suicide following accidentally shooting his 12-year-old sister, Lyric Shirley, in the neck on Wednesday, July 22, according to what the family told local news station 11Alive. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in a home in Stockbridge, Georgia.
The Atlanta news station had previously reported, before the children were identified, that a 14-year-old boy was found dead with a gunshot wound and that a 12-year-old girl was injured and taken to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. This comes as a former NFL player, Jordan Devey, died by suicide earlier this week
The family also shared with the outlet that Lyric has undergone three surgeries on her neck and vocal cords. They are not sure when she will be released from the hospital.
Seven’s grandmother, Sharon Smith, who raised him since he was an 11-month-old baby, shared what potentially could have led to the teen taking his own life. “Just that fast, that boy had made the decision to kill himself,” Smith said to 11Alive.
She continued, “He probably sat up there and thought, ‘I’m finna go to jail, they’re going to ridicule me, everybody is going to be doing this and that and this, and this and that, and he couldn’t take it.'”
The grandmother also shared how Seven would take care of her, noting, “There wasn’t nothing in this world he wouldn’t do for me.”
Smith mentioned how the family is wondering how Seven got his hands on a gun since they have no clue. She added, “Something needs to be done about that person who sold that gun because if he would have never bought that gun, this would have never happened.”
The recent tragedy follows as the family dealt with another heartbreaking loss weeks prior. Smith shared that the Seven’s 13-year-old cousin, DeMarcus Shirley, was killed in a drive-by shooting while staying overnight with friends in DeKalb County earlier in July.
21 Savage, who is described as an uncle to Seven, reacted to the news with a photo of Seven smiling and wearing a 21 diamond chain. The 33-year-old rapper (real name Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph) wrote across the photo he posted on his Instagram Story, “Remember when you were a baby,” with multiple broken heart emojis.
The family additionally submitted a statement to 11Alive. “As we prepare for the homegoing celebration for my beloved nephew, Seven, I respectfully ask everyone to please honor our family’s privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement began.
“Please continue to keep my niece, Lyric, in your prayers. She is fighting for her life, and we are believing God for her healing, strength, and complete recovery,” it added.
The statement continued by asking the community to stand with them in “another way,” which is helping them rid “guns off our streets,” and work together to “stop the illegal sale and access of firearms to minors and do everything we can to protect our children.”
