George Brett will always be the man who built Kauffman/Royals Stadium and defined the franchise for two decades, but his reign as Kansas City home run king has officially ended. Salvador Perez went yard in the seventh inning of Saturday’s divisional battle versus the Detroit Tigers, assuming sole possession of the team record with his 318th career blast.

The captain and 2015 World Series MVP entrenches himself even deeper into Kansas City Royals history after reaching this latest milestone. Best of all, the 401-foot solo homer tied the score in what ultimately turned into a 3-2 KC road victory. Perez obviously would have received a much livelier reaction from his home fans, but there is something satisfying about grabbing the top spot in Comerica Park.
The timely blast also damages Detroit’s already slim playoff chances, thereby increasing the likelihood that the Tigers join the Royals in becoming sellers at the MLB trade deadline. Misery loves company, right?
It has been a rough year for the veteran catcher/first baseman/designated hitter — batting .210 with a .257 on-base percentage and .367 slugging percentage — but he can take enormous pride in becoming Kansas City’s all-time home run leader.

Perez’s 15-year run with the Royals extends well beyond one impressive achievement, however. He ranks second in franchise history with 1,060 RBIs, boasts five Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards, earned nine All-Star Game selections, and finished in the top-10 for American League MVP voting in 2021 (co-led MLB with 48 homers). He has enjoyed a full MLB career, and it has come entirely with KC.
Salvador Perez will look to build his HR lead when the Royals (44-62) square off with the Tigers (50-55) in Sunday’s series finale. First pitch is set for 1:40 p.m. ET.
