The kingdom of Orïsha is coming to dazzling life on the big screen with an all-star cast.
Children of Blood and Bone (in theaters Jan. 15, 2027), the much-anticipated adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi‘s hit 2018 fantasy novel of the same name, has released a first trailer offering glimpses of Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris and Tosin Cole in action-fantasy mode.
They’re supported by an ensemble of acting royalty, including Viola Davis, Regina King, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Lashana Lynch and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who co-wrote the screenplay with Adeyemi, the film follows Mbedu’s Zélie Adebola, a sorceress resisting a cruel regime that oppresses magic.

“All these years, we believed the gods abandoned us,” Mbedu, 34, can be heard saying in the new trailer before Elba, 53, tells her, “They were waiting for you.”
Idris, 34, plays a young prince, Inan, who aids Zélie in her quest to overthrow a tyrannical regime opposed to magic.
Together, they’re joined by Zélie’s brother and Inan’s sister as they face unimaginable forces. At one point, Davis’, 60, character, Mama Agba, coaches Zélie as she trains in complicated fighting styles.
“For years, I have trained you because I believe you are the one who can bring magic back,” she says.
Elsewhere, Prince Inan grapples with the throne, which is led by his mother Queen Nehanda (Regina King) and father King Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Nehanda tells him that he will be the future king, while Inan questions, “What if that is not the kind of king I want to be?”
“I am so honored and excited to bring Tomi’s Children of Blood and Bone and the vibrant world of Orïsha to life,” Prince-Bythewood, 57, told Variety in January 2025 when the project was announced. “Our incredible ensemble reflects the whole of the diaspora. This is where our magic lies.”
