Acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee has stepped forward to defend the Michael Jackson biopic, standing firmly behind the movie and its exploration of the pop star’s legacy. In a recent celebrity.land interview, Lee defended the Lionsgate film against critics who faulted it for omitting the pop icon’s child sexual abuse allegations. Having seen the movie twice, Lee pointed out that the film ends in 1988, years before the first accusation emerged in 1993.
Because of that timeline, he argued, it makes no sense to criticize the omission as that chapter of Jackson’s life simply falls outside the scope of the story. “First of all, if you’re a movie critic, and you’re complaining about the stuff— all this other stuff— but the movie ends at ‘88,” the Old Boy director said. “The stuff you’re talking about, accusations, happen [later]. So you’re critiquing the film on something that you want in, but it doesn’t work in the timeline of the film. But people showed up. Worldwide, people showed their love.”
Lee’s connection to Jackson runs deep, spanning both friendship and film. He directed the iconic 1996 video for They Don’t Care About Us and went on to explore Jackson’s artistry in two documentaries, Bad 25, released in 2012, and Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, which premiered in 2016.
Spike Lee further pointed out that audiences seem unfazed by the backlash. The 2026 biopic called Michael launched with a $97.5 million domestic debut on April 24, 2026. In just two weekends, the film has pulled in $183.8 million in North America and $423 million globally.
