When A Minecraft Movie performed impressively at the box office, it was inevitable that a sequel would be on the way. Now, after a follow-up was officially confirmed, here’s what you need to know.
Following a whopping gross of $957 million, a sequel was finally announced via the film’s social media channels on Thursday (9 October), with a post on X reading: “Building terrain. See you in theaters July 23 2027.”
According to Variety, director Jared Hess will return with an additional role this time around as he co-writes the screenplay with Chris Galletta, while Jason Momoa has been confirmed as a producer (so he will likely return in the cast too!).
It may not come as a huge surprise as Hess revealed in April that talks were already underway on the follow-up, with the filmmaker saying: “Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun.
“We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening.

“So, I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
Of course, Hess is referring to the post-credits scene in which Alex – a player skin from the original game – is introduced, with the director saying that the “critical character” was somebody they would look to “bring to the table”.

With a release date now confirmed, an intriguing box office clash could be on the cards, with the second feature film in The Simpsons franchise also set to hit the big screen on 23 July 2027.
With the animated film being nearly two decades in the making and having a dedicated fanbase, could it topple the video game adaptation if they are eventually released on the same day?
