Abby Lee Miller is recalling a sweet moment with Diane Keaton before the actress’ death.
“This was one of those Hollywood stories one can only dream about! I was in the middle of getting my hair done and Diane Keaton‘s children wanted a picture with me!” Miller, 60, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, October 11, shortly after news broke of the beloved actress’ death. “Here’s this brilliant screen legend standing in front of me right in Santa Monica asking if her kids could have a picture? Whaaaaat?!?!”
She continued, “Of Course Ms Keaton ~ and may I have a picture with you? She will be missed by millions, yet her performances will continue to entertain audiences forever! Thank you ~ Diane Keaton.”
News broke on Saturday that Keaton died at age 79, with a spokesperson for her family telling People that she was in California. No additional information about her death was shared with the outlet as the family “asked for privacy” as they mourn Keaton’s death. Us Weekly reached out for comment.
The next day, Keaton’s close friend, Carole Bayer Sager, shed insight into her last visit with the actress before her death.
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager told People in an interview published on Sunday, October 12. “She had lost so much weight.”
Sager shared that she and Keaton interacted less this year, explaining that the wildfires in California led the Father of the Bride star to spend months in Palm Springs.
“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” Sager recalled. “She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
In Sager’s perspective, Keaton was “a magic light for everyone.”
“I just loved her. She was so special, she just lit up a room with her energy,” she said. “She was happy and upbeat and taking photographs of everything she saw. She was completely creative; she never stopped creating.”
Keaton has been mourned by several celebrities — including Bette Midler, one of the first stars to react to the news.
“The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me,” Midler, 79, wrote via Instagram on Saturday. “She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”
Mandy Moore, meanwhile, recalled working with Keaton on the 2007 movie Because I Said So. “They say don’t meet your heros[sic] but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mom’ for a few months. An honor of a lifetime,” she wrote via Instagram. “What an incandescent human Di is and was.”
Moore added, “I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.”
